Most of the missions were a mix of boundary layer and convective flight patterns depending upon the weather. Prior to mid-February, the majority of the convective patterns were at night, which precluded the collection of a large amount of boundary layer data. After mid-February, the convective missions were conducted during daylight hours so boundary layer and Doppler data were collected simultaneously.
The University of California, Irvine was responsible for the instrumentation and processing of the high-rate (40 Hz) 3-component wind, temperature and humidity data. The high-rate data were recorded on tape during selected periods in the TOGA COARE flights. (It was not possible to record the high-rate turbulence data continuously.) See the UCI WWW page and time series plots of the slow data for each flight to see the periods when the high-rate data were recorded.
Only straight and level runs were processed and only the few pertinent variables for each high-rate run are included here to keep the data volume reasonable:

These data are available in two formats: MATLAB binary (*.mat) files and UNIX compressed ASCII files (*.dat.Z). For the former the variable list is exactly as the one above while for the latter each file is Nx14 matrix or spread sheet whose columns are the variables mentioned above, i.e: [utc t hr lat lon trk ps ta sst wx wy wz ah sh]. (The flight and run identification is not included as a variable in the ASCII files.)
The data files and run times are listed in the appendix. The file naming scheme is:
yymmddAt_rxx_sm.mat for the MATLAB binary files and
f_yymmddAt_rxx_sm.dat.Z for the UNIX compressed ASCII files.
where yymmdd are the UTC year, month and day when the flight started;
A is the aircraft identification (H for WP-3D42 and I for WP-3D43); t
is the fast data tape number; xx is the run number; sm stands for
small (i.e. only 14 variables are included and not all variables). An
example of file names of one run is:
930222I3_r17_sm.mat for the MATLAB binary file
f_930222I3_r17_sm.dat.Z for the UNIX compressed ASCII file
The table below uses the MATLAB binary file's naming scheme without
the "_sm.mat" suffix.The average size of a *.mat file is 2.83 mb and that of a *.dat.Z is 2.76 mb. file. There are 364 files (runs), which amount to a total of 1.032 gb for the *.mat files and 1.004 gb for the *.dat.Z.
Please also see README file and data files for the UCI-processed NOAA WP3D slow-rate (1 Hz) data, as these data are processed similarly to the turbulence data and will provide a more consistent data set should you use both slow- and high-rate data.
