Statement & Bio

"Between the Chinese culture in which I was raised and the American culture in which I now live and work there lies a boundary territory which acts to separate and differentiate these two cultures. My work seeks to explore, map, define and ultimately deconstruct the differences suggested by this territory. I attempt, in my mixing of both traditional Eastern and contemporary Western imagery and iconography, to synthesize a personal, transcultural, visual language of commonality. My hope is that the work I have created with this language will be universally accessible and spiritually resonant for the viewer."

Yaming Di is an artist from the People's Republic of China, currently living in Boston, Massachusetts. He received a Master of Fine Arts Degree from Carnegie Mellon University and a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Nanjing College of Art where he was a "Liu Hai Su" Scholar. Yaming has taught studio art at universities both in China and the United States. His work has been published in art magazines, newspapers and books including Artists of Chinese Origin in North America and Asian American Artists. Yaming has exhibited his work extensively at galleries and museums in several countries. He was awarded the Prix d' Excellence for his piece, "Blue Memory" at the First Annual National Exhibit of Lacquer Painting in the Chinese Fine Arts Museum in Beijing, the Director's Choice for "Permanence of Spring" at the 1995 National Juried Exhibition in the Broadway Art Gallery in Littleton, CO, and "The Best of Show" for "Flying II" at the 15th Annual Exhibition/Competition at the Hollywood Art & Culture Center. In 1995, Yaming collaborated with Chris Siefert on a mural about the history of Pittsburgh, Market Square and the steel industry entitled "Regional Patterns". It is the first mural to be installed in Historic Market Square in Downtown Pittsburgh. In 1996, Yaming has been granted permanent residence in the United States on the basis of his international acclaim as an Outstanding Artist. Most recently, Yaming has been selected as one of the best abstract artists on the World Wide Web.
